At a glance
Kimura Shukokai International is a worldwide Karate organisation with members in 19 countries spread over 4 continents. Kimura Shukokai Karate`s main attributes are speed, power, control and the use of body mechanics. It is a unique style that creates explosive movements by using the body in the most efficient way.
The earliest forms of unarmed disciplined fighting have their origin in India and China and were brought over to the Ryukyu Islands by Chinese merchants. The Japanese discovered this ” empty hand fighting ” in the early 17th century and consequently developed their own style, especially on the island of Okinawa, which would resulted in a combination of Kenpo and a local art of fighting, known as Okinawa -Te.
From karate to Kimura Shukokai karate
Funakoshi Gichin was the father of modern karate. He created the Shotokan style, one of the oldest styles, from which two of his students created Goju-Ryu (Chojun Miyagi) and Shito Ryu (Kenwa Mabuni). One can assume, that most of the newer styles are a combination of these three traditional ones.
Master Chojiro Tani (1921-1998) one of Sensei Mabuni`s highest graded students named his first dojo ” The Shukokai “, which basically means, meeting people and training under one roof. Master Tani encouraged his best students to create and develop new ideas and so Sensei Fujiwara and Sensei Kimura lead the Shukokai style and gave it a worldwide reputation.
Organisation
After the surprising death of Soke Shigeru Kimura in 1995, his four highest graded students, Shihans Eddie Daniels from the UK, Bill Bressaw from the USA and the two South Africans Chris Thompson and Lionel Marinus, founded and still lead the KSI organization.
All four Shihans, who are 8 Dans and have trained for over 25 years with Soke Kimura are constantly developing and working on this style, in an untiring effort to refine these unique techniques.
Kimura Shukokai International is the official world organisation and has members in: Australia, Botswana, Germany, Estonia, Finland, UK, India, Ireland, Canada, Mozambique, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland, Seychelles, South Africa, USA and Zimbabwe
